Most of the animals at the Navajo Nation Zoo are blessed with natural sandstone features or junipers within their enclosures to provide shade from the summer sun and protection from the winter snows. Some animals were not so fortunate though.

Our goal is to provide ARTIFICIAL SHADE STRUCTURES for those animals without natural features in their enclosures. In 2011, we identified the most immediate needs are for the elk and porcupines.

During the winter, we completed a metal-framed roof for the elk. This roof protected the elk through the winter storms.

Our second shade under construction was for the porcupines, which was completed in September 2011. This shade, in the shape and color of a Tiger Swallowtail, also serves as an awesome, colorful piece of art!
